Andy Mirkovich - Accordion Maestro

Andy Mirkovich has deep ties to Gig Harbor’s fishing families. His grandmother, Famie, was part of the pioneering Ross family, and his parents Andrew and Pearl were long time Harbor residents. Andy vividly remembers being inspired to play music while listening to Jack Bujacich Sr. sing as John Ross Sr. accompanied on the accordion in the basement of the Ross home. Soon after, at 5 years of age, Andy began accordion lessons with Joe Spano and has been playing ever since. Andy has performed with and for icons of the entertainment industry including Lawrence Welk, Liberace, Burl Ives, Danny Kaye and the Vienna Boys Choir. He was a featured performer at the Space Needle for over a decade and today is a renowned and true accordion maestro.

CANTRIP LATE SHOW

SOLD OUT!

SPECIAL EVENT! (“Their music comes from wild landscapes and wild places of the spirit." -- The Orcadian) Cantrip brings over 20 years of touring experience and energetic character filled music all the way from Edinburgh to the Gig Harbor BoatShop!

The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. After 24 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews, Alasdair White, and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron, slowly coalescing into chaotic order.

Margo Murphy & John Roberts with Ruthie Dornfeld

Margo Murphy & John Roberts with Ruthie Dornfeld

SOLD OUT!

Raised on different shores of Puget Sound, John and Margo each fostered a love of duet harmony singing. When they met at a music festival it was apparent their collaboration was creating something special, with their seamless vocal blend and tasteful acoustic guitar playing. Expect vintage country classics from Merle Haggard, the Carter Family, etc., with the occasional re-invented pop song from the likes of Credence Clearwater R.

John, a longtime member of Bellinghams Nooksack Valley Boys bluegrass band, has spent his life working on fishing boats. This summer he came out of recent retirement for a two-day salmon opening in Puget Sound on the historic 1920 purse seiner Wisconsin, built in Gig Harbor. He may be cajoled into sharing a fish story or two.

Margo enchants audiences with her luscious song interpretations. John is probably her biggest fan and describes her voice as a cross between Maria Muldaur and Doris Day.

Together John and Margo have charmed audiences from Vancouver, B.C. to Portland, OR, including repeat appearances at the Bellingham Folk Festival and the Ovations event at UWs Meany Hall. They were thrilled when The Sea & the Sky, their first CD collaboration, received airplay significant enough to chart on the 2018 FOLKDJ list!

Acclaimed fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld will be joining Margo and John at the BoatShop. Ruthies big tone, fierce rhythm and fluid style have won her popularity throughout the USA and abroad, from the Manhaus Opera House in the Brazilian Amazon to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland.
Dont miss out on this gem of a concert!

Steve Itterly

Steve Itterly

Steve Itterly is a northwest-based singer-songwriter who draws from a deep well of American musical traditions to create distinctively personal music that is timeless without being overly nostalgic.

Hailing from New York, Steve ventured to Boston after college where he studied country blues and ragtime guitar with local greats Paul Rishell and Radcliff Thomas. It wasn’t until he moved to Colorado where he honed his skills and began writing songs of his own, pulling from genres such as country blues, early jazz, western swing, folk, and ragtime.

Steve’s musical journey began in his early teens when his father and brother introduced him to Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, and Blind Willie Johnson to name a few. There was something mystical in the raw passion of the guitar and vocals that moved him deeply.

Steve’s musical style is true to form with his passionate vocals, finger-style prowess, and ripping slide guitar. He has won the Telluride Blues & Blues Festival’s Country Blues Competition and he is a recognized songwriter in his own right. He has shared a bill with greats such as Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Steve Winwood, Jack Broadbent, Anders Osborne, and Benjamin Booker.

Greg Blake & Real Country

Greg Blake & Real Country

“Country” will always be at the foundation of Greg Blake’s interpretations of songs and lyrics.  Even classical voice training in college did not deter him from continuing in the rich traditions of Appalachian twang that you’ll hear underlying his phrasing, and though Greg loves bluegrass, and considers himself a bluegrass singer, those audiences not as familiar with Monroe and Flatt love to hear the warmth, resonance and clarity when Blake delivers a ballad.

Having the privilege of traveling and performing with several different musicians, young and old, near and far, famous and yet to be discovered, Blake has found a stellar group of young musicians that have the same interest in and passion for preserving, promoting and performing an interesting marriage of musical genres. Greg, Nico, Miles and Isaac will be seen at any given time, traveling literally around the world performing a 45-50 minute set of blistering and/or mournful traditional bluegrass, and then turn around and dawn a Telecaster, sit down at the pedal steel and deliver an hour long set of Cash, Haggard, Jones and Buck Owens classic country music that will bring back memories of AM radio and Saturday night dances.

Corner House

Corner House

Abiding by a love for adventure, Corner House finds purpose and solace in the beauty of earth and music. Clinging whole heartedly to studied traditions, the Boston based band has tended to write and arrange music liberally comprised of Irish, Scottish, Appalachian stringband, and bluegrass influences.
The singular roots music scene of Boston, MA has long been a destination for musicians seeking level footing to build upon. On winter eves most suited for warm tea and blankets, Ethan Hawkins (guitar), Louise Bichan (fiddle), Ethan Setiawan (mandolin), found a musical home in one another. In the fall of 2017, Corner House had debuted at FreshGrass Festival in North Adams, MA and were making preparations to record an EP and tour Scotland, which they did in the summer of the following year. Returning from overseas, the three found the illustrious cellist, Casey Murray, living just down the street and invited the contra-dance influenced player to join the fold.

Nicholas Hornerand and Lucas Chohany have a musical kinship unlike any other. With a love for traditional music and honest songwriting presented with the spontaneity of jazz and the reckless abandon of rock music, Nick and Luke have cultivated a musical language all their own. While playing a combination of americana-rooted original music, jazz standards and the bluegrass/old-time liturgy, their performances ebb and flow to create a playful blend of the visceral and the virtuosic.

Band bio:

Known primarily for his visual fish-filled art Ray Troll has also been in love with the guitar since he first saw the Beatles rocking it on Ed Sullivan that fateful evening way back in 1964. When art bands like the Talking Heads, Devo and the B-52s hit the scene in the late 70’s it really got Ray psyched to hit the stage. When the Ramones let loose their rock and roll fury with ‘three chords and the truth’ Troll knew the time was truly right for him.  During a fateful turn as a substitute art teacher in the mid-80’s, Ray met Russell Wodehouse and Shauna Lee, two funky fresh teens who had been riding the British synth pop craze with their own brand of pop music.  Thirty years later, the trio is still hitting the stage with a unique sound and delicious visuals.

Along the way the band has grown and tightened with the addition of masterful guitarist, Brian Curtis who brings his own flavor to the Wrangler sound.  A veteran of garage bands, folk fests and fishing holes, in addition to lead guitar, Brian also wields a mean bass and a furious fiddle.

The most recent addition to the group is Chazz Gist who joined in 2015. A youngster amongst the vets but with classically trained fingers that fly across his 7 string bass with the power and grace of players twice his age, he will take you to school with his hot bass licks.

Drummer Patrick Troll was just a small fry growing up at the fin of his father, Ray, when he began to play music. He showed great promise from a young age and has mastered several instruments including guitar, drums and the turntable. He makes his home in the Pacific Northwest where he swims between Alaska and Washington on a regular basis. Patrick joins the band when they tour in the Northwest.

As their journey down the musical highway has picked up speed, they have played for many noted organizations including the American Fisheries Society, the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.  They participate in several annual concerts including The Fisherpoets Gathering in Astoria, Oregon, Folk Fest in Juneau and Salmonfest in Ninilchik, Alaska.  They have penned a song for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History to welcome the newest T-rex specimen and for NOAA to educate fisherfolks about the benefits of rockfish recompression. They have played their aquatic anthems as far north as Alice’s Champagne Palace in Homer, Alaska and taken a dip into deep-fish-funk at the Seattle Aquarium.

The Ratfish Wranglers latest musical offering is “Fish Worship”, a collection of funky rock, fishy rap and eclectic vocals that every Alaskan should be blasting on their next trip to the fishing grounds.
