Community Rowing Program

Pull an oar. Touch history. See the Harbor.
Every Sunday | Summer Season | Free for the Community

Welcome Aboard our Free Community Rowing Program

Step back in time and pull an oar aboard our replica of the captain’s gig that first entered Gig Harbor in 1841. Whether you’re a seasoned rower or have never pulled an oar, our Community Rowing program offers a unique way to see Gig Harbor from the perspective of the explorers who named it.

Program Details:

  • When: Every Sunday, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

  • Time: 2:00pm (Rows typically last 60–90 minutes).

  • Where: 3805 Harborview Drive, departing from the Boatyard dock

  • Cost: Free! Registration is required.

  • The Boat: Porpoise, A 10-oared traditional longboat (gig) steered by a veteran BoatShop skipper.

Our Community Rows are free, but because Porpoise only holds 10 rowers, reservations are required. We manage sign-ups on a week-by-week basis to ensure everyone gets a fair shot at a seat.

FAQ

  • Expect a team-oriented experience. Gig rowing is about rhythm and synchronization. Under the direction of the Skipper, you and up to nine other rowers will learn to "toss," "let fall," and "give way" together. It is a social, rhythmic, and meditative way to experience the water. If weather permits, we may stow the oars for a bit and put up the sails.

  • To ensure safety and the ability to handle the oars, participants must be at least 12 years old. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

No experience is required. Participants should be comfortable with the physical effort described below:

    • You must be able to board the boat from the dock (which requires some balance) and maintain a repetitive rowing motion.

    • Traditional wooden oars are heavier than modern oars. You’ll feel it in your core and shoulders, but we keep a pace that allows for conversation and enjoying the view.

If you’re not sure, we welcome you to come down to the dock and observe one of our sessions and see if it’s right for you.

  • Yes! Our Community Row is a 100% free program. There is no cost to participate and no tips are accepted. We believe everyone should have the chance to experience Gig Harbor’s maritime history firsthand.

If you would like to support the BoatShop's mission, we welcome general donations. Your contributions help us maintain our fleet of historic vessels and keep community activities like this available for years to come.

  • We row light rain or shine. In the PNW, a little mist is part of the authenticity!

Our skipper may decide to postpone or cancel if weather or wind cause unsafe conditions. We will notify participants as far in advance as possible in the event of a cancellation.

  • The weather on the water can be 10 degrees cooler than on land.

    • Wear: Layers are key! Wear synthetic or wool clothing that moves easily.

    • Footwear: Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip (boat shoes or sneakers). No flip-flops or heels.

    • Bring: A reusable water bottle, hat, and sunglasses. If you have a PFD and sailing gloves feel free to bring them along. We also have plenty available to borrow.

    • Leave Behind: Large items such as backpacks, as space is limited.

  • You can bring a sealable water bottle, but community rowing is active and there will be little to no time to eat or drink.

If it’s a floating picnic you desire, consider renting one of our Livery Vessels!

  • There are no restrooms aboard the boat, but there are restrooms in the Boatyard House at the base of the Eddon Boatyard driveway.
