Maritime Mentorship Program

A unique opportunity for a high school or college aged intern designed to expose them to a timeless and useful art by connecting in a one on one mentor-intern environment.

The Maritime Mentorship Program (MMP) was designed and implemented by Gig Harbor BoatShop in 2015. The program pairs experienced boatbuilders and boat restorers with youth (interns) to introduce them to boatbuilding, boat repair and boat restoration skills, techniques, and practices.

Interns benefit from skilled mentor’s accumulated skill and knowledge. They will fully participate in the practical hands-on work of every phase of a restoration or new-build project.  Interns will gain new skills, and historical boatbuilding and boat restoration perspectives that can open the door to a marine trades occupation or avocation.  Lastly, interns will have the rare opportunity to work with a master craftsman that has a sincere passion regarding the craft, a component of work often overlooked in today’s competitive job environment.

Program Goals

In addition to gaining new hands-on skills and opening doors to a maritime occupation or avocation,  the MMP program will foster an appreciation for craftsmanship and build awareness of the marine trades and the roles they play on the northwest working waterfront. Interns are provided a rare opportunity to learn from a working craftsman that is highly skilled and passionate about their trade.

Former MMP projects include: Restoration of a 1941 Chris-Craft 101 Deluxe, a classic 16’ wooden runabout; a complete restoration of a 17’ 1964 Chris Craft Super Sport; and the building of an Iain Oughtred-designed Gannet sailing dinghy. The Maritime Mentorship Program has provided 10 young adults with internships.
