Veteran Sound Stories

SOUND STORIES: A Veteran heritage cruise

See puget sound sights through the eyes of an experienced ship's pilot or Commercial fishing skipper

About the excursion: Maybe you're a weathered mariner, or maybe you've never stepped foot on a boat before. No matter what your background is, this unique program is guaranteed to be unlike anything you've experienced. Spend an afternoon aboard the historic purse seine vessel Veteran cruising Puget Sound - you'll visit places like Commencement Bay and its waterways, Tacoma's ports, historic commercial fishing grounds, and more. The exact locations will be determined by your USCG licensed skipper and weather and traffic conditions. Along the way, you'll be regaled with maritime history, nautical information, and believe-it-or-not stories from your captain, who is a Puget Sound ship's pilot or commercial fishing skipper with years of on-the-water experience. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is not to be missed.

About the Veteran: The Skansie purse seiner Veteran, launched in 1926, is a beautifully restored sample of one of the most recognized and significant vessel designs to have originated from Gig Harbor. One of over 100 purse seiners constructed during the 1920s and 1930s at the Skansie Ship Building Company, Veteran and her sister ships were widely recognized as the state-of-the-art purse seiners of their day. Veteran and sister ship Avalon were retained and operated by the Skansie family which, like many Gig Harbor pioneer families, commercially fished for salmon and bottom fish in the waters of Washington State. The Veteran has been carefully maintained to preserve the original design and character and is still able to participate in today’s commercial salmon fishery.
