Fish Stories Tour
FISH STORIES: A Veteran heritage cruise
PLEASE NOTE: Fish Stories are only offered during the limited fall fishing season each year (usually October - November) and are subject to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife fishing schedule, which may change based on fish returns and other data. We work hard to ensure the dates advertised below are as accurate as possible, but please be aware any changes to the fishing schedule may result in excursion date or time changes or cancellations. Please see the fine print below for more details. Thank you in advance for your flexibility!
Get up close and personal with the gig harbor commercial fishing fleet aboard the veteran
About the excursion: You've seen the fleet tied up in the Harbor. Here's your chance to experience commercial fishing from a front-and-center vantage point aboard the historic purse seine vessel Veteran. Join a USCG licensed skipper with extensive commercial fishing experience aboard the Veteran during a fall seine "opening." Observe local fisherman ply the waters of West (Colvos) Pass and visit historic fishing sites along the way. If time and weather permit, your skipper will take you to other local Puget Sound sights and points of interest.
About the Veteran: The Skansie purse seiner Veteran, launched in 1926, is a beautifully restored sample of one of the most recognized and significant vessel designs to have originated from Gig Harbor. One of over 100 purse seiners constructed during the 1920s and 1930s at the Skansie Ship Building Company, Veteran and her sister ships were widely recognized as the state-of-the-art purse seiners of their day. Veteran and sister ship Avalon were retained and operated by the Skansie family which, like many Gig Harbor pioneer families, commercially fished for salmon and bottom fish in the waters of Washington State. The Veteran has been carefully maintained to preserve the original design and character and is still able to participate in today’s commercial salmon fishery.
